Dark Reads Review
Well I had me a hog-killin’ time with this one! I will try my best to not go full on fan girl……
I really enjoy Western Horrors, it’s reminiscent of watching Sunday afternoon Westerns with my Grandfather and Uncle as a child. Dust Devils didn’t just have the sense of scene for me, I really felt a sense of time leaping off of the pages.
This was one of those books that I put it down in the evening and could not wait to get up in the morning to read more!
Dust Devils throws you straight into the action, Codey is hot on the heels of the five ‘men’ who seduced and murdered his wife while posing as a travelling show. Watching from afar Cody meets eight year old Willet Black who’s whole family have been slaughtered by the same men. The unlikely pair both seek revenge and set off on their journey to find it together.
The friendship formed between Cody and Willet was great; Codey is no seasoned Gunslinger, he is just a normal guy who has been humiliated and betrayed. He is convinced he is a coward and not able to stand up for himself yet he puts his life on the line without a blink of an eye for Willet. Dust Devils is a real journey of self-discovery for Codey.
Willet is a tough little guy who has had everything taken from him, he learns to trust Codey and the two quickly become friends. I thought the relationship between them was written beautifully by Janz.
I don’t like to make character comparisons but I must admit I had Roland and Jake feels with these two, I really enjoyed the scenes between them!
Now, I’m not usually a big Vampire fan, but I was not disappointed by the vampires in this story, these were not conventional vampires! These are almost a new breed of vampire completely, they are savage killing machines, who consume flesh as well as the blood of their victims. They take on horrifying forms, elongated faces, burning orange eyes and rows of razor sharp teeth. I LOVE these ‘vampires’. For me Janz has officially made Vampires terrifying again.
The Mid section of the book is full on carnage, with some pretty graphic gore and sex, we see the vampires in all their glory in a full on Fight like Kilkenny cats. It was gruesome and depraved and I loved it! We are also introduced to Marguerite here, a tough female character who knows her mind, she is awesome!
Dust Devils is fast paced and action packed throughout, there is a nice balance of backstory included via flashbacks. There are poignant relationships, inner turmoils and some truly heart-breaking scenes especially towards the end of the book.
Janz is quickly becoming a favorite author for me, I don’t usually give a ‘Star Rating’ on my blog reviews but this is an easy 5 Stars from me!
If you like Horror in a western scene, with plenty of gore and action Dust Devils is definitely one for you!
About The Author
Jonathan Janz grew up between a dark forest and a graveyard, which explains everything. Brian Keene named his debut novel The Sorrows “the best horror novel of 2012.” The LibraryJournal deemed his follow-up, House of Skin, “reminiscent of Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House and Peter Straub’s Ghost Story.”
Since then Jonathan’s work has been lauded by writers like Jack Ketchum, Edward Lee, Tim Waggoner, Bryan Smith, and Ronald Kelly. Novels like The Nightmare Girl, Wolf Land, Savage Species, and Dust Devils prompted Thunderstorm Books to sign Jonathan to an eleven-book deal and to give him his own imprint, Jonathan Janz’s Shadow Side.
His novel Children of the Dark received a starred review in Booklist and was chosen by their board as one of the Top Ten Horror Books of the Year (August2015-September2016). Children of the Dark will soon be translated into German and has been championed by the Library Journal, the School Library Journal, and Cemetery Dance. In early 2017, his novel Exorcist Falls was released to critical acclaim.
Jonathan’s primary interests are his wonderful wife and his three amazing children, and though he realizes that every author’s wife and children are wonderful and amazing, in this case the cliché happens to be true. You can learn more about Janz on his Website and follow him on Twitter.
