Welcome to Dark Reads stop on the Random Things Tour for Slash by Hunter Shea. Many thanks to Anne and Flame Tree Press for inviting me to take part and for providing me with a copy of the book in return for my review.
About The Book
Five years after final girl Ashley King survived the infamous Resort Massacre, she’s found hanging in her basement by her fiancé Todd Matthews. She left behind clues as to what really happened that night, clues that may reveal the identity of the killer the press had called The Wraith.
With the help of his friends, Todd goes back to the crumbing Hayden Resort, a death-tinged ruin in the Catskills Mountains. What they find is a haunted history that’s been lying in wait for a fresh set of victims
The Wraith is back, and he’s nothing what they expected.

Dark Reads Review
Well this was a fun read! Certainly reminiscent of the good old Slasher Movies (which I love) Slash is a cleverly written story, it’s like the Slasher Movies bigger brainier brother.
The story starts out with Ashley, the ‘final girl’ from the Resort Massacre. She is struggling with PTSD following the horrors she experienced and is living a life governed by anxiety and paranoia. When she begins to recover suppressed memories things become too much and she commits suicide. This sets in motion a series of events that leads Todd and his friends back to the Hotel and into a deadly game of cat and mouse.
I really loved that the first 40% of the book really concentrated on backstory, scene setting and character development, especially surrounding what happened to Ashley and how she could never be the same again. I found myself really invested in Ashley’s character which felt a little odd considering she wasn’t physically in the majority of the book.
I enjoyed the trail of breadcrumbs and figuring out clues part of the storyline, I felt like we were off on an adventure which was great, I would have liked some more of that at the Hayden.
Another character I really connected with was Sharon, feisty, flawed and brilliant. The others I didn’t particularly care for, but then with this type of story you need a good handful of disposable characters.
The imagery was first class in this book; an abandoned hotel with a murderous history and a group being stalked by a sinister psycho killer, what more could you want!?
I was pleasantly surprised with the identity of The Wraith, and I loved the supernatural and folklaw elements that were introduced towards the end of the story, that definitely put the Hunter Shea stamp on the book.
Slash was a tense, gruesome and a very gory tale of revenge and survival, a must read for Horror and Slasher fans. Go get a copy you won’t be disappointed I promise!
