Welcome back to Dark Reads. Today I have a gross book review of Disco Rice by the fabulous Robert Essig. I’m lucky enough to be on Robert’s ARC team so I got to read this one early, pre sale is up now and the book releases on 3rd March. You aren’t going to want to miss out on this one!
About The Book

People don’t understand why I do what I do. I’ve always been misunderstood. I have accepted this but maybe I’ve gone too far.
I just can’t help myself. I like the soft texture, the squishing of them in my mouth. The way they pop between my teeth. And I can’t get enough.
It all started when I worked at the landfill. But that was taken away from me. So I brought my habit home. My family doesn’t understand but I think they’re coming around to seeing things my way. If only people tried it they too would grow to appreciate the feeling of squirming in their mouths. The complex flavor profile. The thrill of engaging in something so exclusive, so . . . taboo.
It’s an experience. A way of life.
Nothing hits quite like Disco Rice!
Dark Reads Review
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Disco Rice, sounds groovy right?!
well, it’s actually a groovy way of saying maggots, and maggots is what our main character Trey craves!
We follow our main character Trey, husband and father of two. He works at the local landfill, he has been in and out of jobs but really feels like he’s found his calling working at the dump. Partly because he is able to satisfy his strange relationship with rubbish and his compulsions to eat it.
It’s clear Trey is troubled and is struggling with some pretty taboo intrusive thoughts, the more time that passes, the stronger these urges become.
One day he is caught eating maggots at work and is fired on the spot. Trey has been fired before and can’t bare to tell his wife that he has lost another job and certainly not the reason why! So he keeps it secret and is kinda left to his own devices.
Loosing his job sends his already fragile mind into a spiral of insanity and obsession, you think it’s not going to go there, but it does!
I made the mistake of starting this book on my lunch break..Not much turns my stomach but I’m not good with smells.
Bins, food waste, rotting flesh are a no from me.
Essig writes in such a discriptive way, it’s like you can actually smell this book. Ew.
This was a quick read, but increadably well written, Trey’s character had real depth to it.
His descent into madness was brilliant
to read. I did kinda feel sorry for him, is that weird, that’s probably weird.
I loved this book, it’s a fast paced gross out with a storyline that hits on a deeper level.
