Welcome back to Dark Reads. Today I am talking about This Damned House II by Robert Essig, it was released yesterday and this is one you need to check out!
I’m not going to go too much into the plot as this is a short read at 127 pages. Within the book there are four short stories with a fifth overarching story.
The story follows Marcus, he is the landlord or an apartment block, Greenwood Planes. Marcus lives in a house on the hill and spies on the residents through a telescope. In his attic he has a model of Greenwood Planes and uses this as a medium to inflict terror on the residents who live there.
These stories were wild! They are surreal, weird and violent. There is also a good amount of dark humour in there too, I loved it! There is a jealous guitar, devilish ornaments and a take on The Picture Of Dorian Grey.
With each story the more disturbing it became and I loved the way the overarching story pulled them all together at the end.
My favourite of the 4 stories was the last one, this wasn’t overtly gory but was definitely a disturbing subject matter and was heavy on the psychological horror. It looked at a person’s insanity and how they don’t recognise that they are insane, they feel like they are doing the right thing and I thought it was brilliant!
If you enjoy good horror well written, something a little bit surreal and weird with a great big helping of gore you need to check This Damned House Il out!
